Expertise in managing cardiac devices
Heart rhythm disorders, known as an arrhythmias, are characterized by dangerously slow rates (bradycardia), heart racing (SVT, VT), or rhythm irregularity (atrial fibrillation, PVCs). Many arrhythmias have serious consequences or may be life-threatening, and should be treated by an arrhythmia specialist (cardiac electrophysiologist).
Astria Heart Institute's arrhythmia specialists have the training and expertise to provide advanced care for heart rhythm disorders. Astria Health’s board-certified cardiologists and cardiac electrophysiologists use tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), Holter and ambulatory telemetry monitors, implantable loop recorders, and perform electrophysiology studies to diagnose arrhythmias.
State-of-the-Art Arrhythmia Treatment
Depending on the type and severity of the arrhythmia, there are a range of treatment options. Astria Heart Institute provides comprehensive arrhythmia treatment, from lifestyle-modification assistance to highly complex catheter ablation procedures and cardiac device implantation:
- Lifestyle modification and medical management:Stress, caffeine, alcohol or other substances can contribute to arrhythmias. Astria Heart Institute provides education and resources to help you adopt healthier lifestyle habits to eliminate arrhythmias. When lifestyle changes are insufficient, arrhythmia specialists can develop a treatment plan using medications.
- Cardioversion:Fast arrhythmias, such as certain cases of atrial fibrillation, may be treated by delivering a controlled electrical shock to the heart, restoring the heart’s normal rhythm.
- Catheter ablation:Catheters fitted with a tiny electrodes may be positioned in the heart through the blood vessels, and used to eliminate abnormal heart cells that are causing the arrhythmia. Ablation procedures may be performed with anesthesia support to maximize patient comfort. The Astria Heart Institute is a center of excellence and regional referral center for ablation of complex arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, PVCs, and ventricular tachycardia (VT).
- Implantable devices:Pacemakers, implanted defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronization devices (CRT) are surgically placed just under the skin—with leads advanced through a vein into the heart. These devices send electrical signals to the heart to regulate heart rate and rhythm. The Astria heart rhythm specialists perform a full range of device implants including subcutaneous ICD (S-ICD) and His-bundle pacemakers (HBP).
Cardiac Surgery: The Astria Heart Institute is the only hospital in Yakima performing cardiac surgery. For patient safety, ablation and device procedures should only be performed in a hospital with on-site cardiac surgery. For their own protection, patient’s should insist on the Astria Heart Institute for all cardiac procedures.
